Canon Reveals PowerShot Cameras With DIGIC 5 Image Processor


The DIGIC 5 is here and Canon has introduced the new image processor in two different PowerShot cameras that will retail for $430 each. The first camera is the SX40 HS, which will be available starting in late September. Updating the SX30 IS, the SX40 features a 12.1 megapixel CMOS image sensor as opposed to the previous model's 14 megapixel CCD.According to Canon, the move to a CMOS sensor along with the DIGIC 5 image processor results in a significant increase in image quality.

Image stabilization and Zoom Framing Assist help to keep images sharp and track focus for moving objects when zoomed in. Full HD 1080p video recording is also a feature of the SX40, along with improved AUTO settings based on a library of 32 predefined scenes.Sharing the DIGIC 5 image processor with the SX40, the S100 adds GPS tagging for Exif data and even lower light sensitivity with maximum ISO of up to 6400. Optical zoom at 5x and a three inch LCD display are part of a compact form factor. Super slow motion video recording along with full HD 1080p come standard with an HDMI output.

For its small size the S100 is packed with features, including RAW and JPEG formats, face and blink detection, and six different IS modes to keep images sharp when panning or snapping macro shots. The S100 updates the existing S95 model and is slated for release in early November.High-Speed Burst HQ mode makes it possible to shoot eight frames per second at full resolution, a vast improvement over the previous model. Besides excellent low light capabilities, the SX40 sports a 35x optical zoom and 2.7 inch LCD display.
