Brookline selectmen reject state grant for cruiser cameras

Brookline selectmen reject state grant for cruiser cameras

Because state rules are unclear over the use, storage and sharing of data collected by a cruiser-mounted digital camera system, Brookline’s Board of Selectmen Tuesday unanimously voted against accepting $20,460 in state highway safety funds for the system. The Police Department had won the grant for the system earlier this summer. It would have allowed the department to quickly read thousands of license plates on parked and moving cars in town.

Police Chief Daniel O’Leary said at the time that it would initially be used to identify stolen cars, cars used in crimes in other parts of the state, and unregistered or uninsured cars. He said once the department purchased the necessary software packages it would be used to identify cars with multiple outstanding parking tickets, which are on the town’s “tow list”, and speed up ticketing for cars exceeding the two-hour on-street parking limit or which were violating permit regulations.

But residents and the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts objected to vague state requirements that the town share the collected license plate data, and worried that the camera system might be used against innocent vehicle owners. They asked for tighter safeguards.A draft policy was presented on Tuesday, but the selectmen said that objections issued by the civil liberties union were worth incorporating in a new draft which they hoped would more fully protect the driving public.

O’Leary proposed that his department look at purchasing a similar system with town funds, which could be programmed to serve the needs of the department: mostly parking violations and flagging the tow list quickly. Selectwoman Nancy Daly , after hearing from Town Meeting Member Clint Richmond , suggested that the department also run a cost-benefit analysis, so the town could be sure it would actually save money, as well as officers’ time.

The permit was valued at $175,000, according to city documents."We're going to spiff it up a little bit," said Randy Bush, regional manager for Boulder Ski Deals and Colorado Ski & Golf, "but do it in a way that's going to keep our culture intact and keep the specialty feel intact."In past years, Boulder Ski Deals has utilized the neighboring space for its annual Spyder Sale. While most businesses such as restaurants and food retailers that require refrigerant facilities will naturally buy commercial refrigeration there are some people who do not use it but could certainly benefit from it. Space, however, also has become more coveted in recent years because of increasing foot-traffic and a growing interest in a wider selection of products -- including casual hiking gear and apparel, he said.

By knocking down the wall, Boulder Ski Deals will bring on an additional 2,500 square feet. The larger space combined with a three-phase remodel is expected to allow for the expansion of categories such as footwear, lifestyle apparel and technical apparel; an improvement to the customer traffic flow between the aisles; and the addition of new products.Work is slated to begin late next week and is expected to conclude in six to seven weeks, Bush said. The idea of wholesale electronics thus flourished. Wholesale electronics, a widely used term nowadays, are electronic products sold directly to the customers at the retail prices without the involvement of middlemen.

So I might as well tell everybody this myself before it gets around. I shot a man today. I gave a wonderfully nice guy named Pat Hurst a flesh wound with a framing nailer. He was trying to show me how to use it properly as we built window bench seating. I hope his wife and kids forgive me. It has been an absolutely exhausting day. There was drywall and mud work going on all night long and this morning we picked back up with building all of the different wooden accessories that are built in.

I can say enough about the Hurst Remodeling team. Pat, Dan and Brian are brothers. Really sweet Irish guys who showed an extreme amount a patience with a novice screwing up their carefully planned out timeline. And then there's Dom Pillin. He is the task master. He pretends he hates this whole thing, mutter under his breath about all the annoying things we are doing. Tomorrow is a race to the finish line as we still have floors to lay. We did have the please of beating Josh Temple in a little course laying contest. He had to do pushups. OK maybe there were two of us but we aren't licensed contractors. And we have to paint all of the walls and ceiling tonight. Luckily we've got some help.
